What is Restorative Dental Care?

Any procedure that aims to restore the normal function and appearance of your smile is referred to as restorative dental care.

By fixing structural problems such as missing or damaged teeth, your dentist at Ottawa Downtown Dentist can help restore your smile – and your oral health.

Depending on your issue, our dentist will determine the appropriate restorative treatment option for you.

Root Canals

Diseased tissues, blood vessels and nerves need to be removed from the interior of a tooth so further dental issues can be avoided. By removing decay and bacteria, your dentist helps stop the spread of infection and prevents the need for an extraction. This safe and effective dental procedure contributes to better oral health long-term.

Dental Bridges

Custom-made bridges are natural-looking tooth replacements that are bonded to existing teeth or dental implants to replace a section of missing teeth. They restore the natural contour of a tooth and the bite between upper and lower teeth. Because they are made precisely for the patient's mouth, they are barely noticeable.

Inlays & Onlays

When a tooth is too severely damaged to be repaired with a standard dental filling, inlays and onlays are used to fill cavities. These tooth-coloured porcelain fillings are custom-made in a dental laboratory, then permanently cemented to the tooth as a single piece.

Dental Fillings

Fillings are used to repair cavities or damage such as cracks in a tooth. While composite (tooth-coloured) fillings can withstand moderate pressure from the continual stress of chewing and are popular for their natural appearance, amalgam fillings are silver in appearance. They are more durable and are often used on back teeth.

Dental Crowns

These porcelain caps are placed on top of teeth and used to attach bridges, prevent a cracked tooth from further deteriorating or to cover dental implants. They restore a tooth's function and appearance and are also helpful for aesthetic purposes, such as lightening the colour of a stained tooth to its natural shade.

A crown may be recommended for a tooth that is too small for a filling. They may also be used after a root canal procedure. Made of a selection of durable materials, including metal, porcelain and ceramic, a crown can blend in with your natural teeth. When cared for properly, they can last more than 10 years.

Guided Implant Placements

Computer-guided implant surgery allows for dental implants to be manufactured and placed more precisely, accurately and efficiently. Our dentist uses 3D imaging, CT scans and other digital technology to scan your mouth, have implants fabricated and properly placed, many times within the same day when normally this process would take several appointments.

Full & Partial Dentures

These artificial teeth are used to replace one missing tooth or several consecutive teeth (partial dentures), or an entire jaw of missing teeth (full dentures). They allow patients with missing teeth to maintain their facial structure, and to speak and chew properly. They can also be removed for sleeping and cleaning. Your dentist can help determine which dentures are right for you.

Periodontal (Gum) Therapy

Gum disease can infect the tissues of the mouth, including the cementum, periodontal ligament, gums, gingiva and alveolar bone. If your dentist catches the disease in its early stages, non-surgical preventive therapy will be recommended. Otherwise, the type and severity of the disease will determine treatment methods.

TMJ Disorder Treatment

The temporomandibular joint (or TMJ) is a hinge which joins your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull. The disorder of the joint can lead to a host of issues with your facial muscles and jaw, including painful symptoms. Our dentists can detect, diagnose and develop a treatment plan for TMJ Disorder.
