What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin sheets of synthetic material, which are bonded to the tooth’s surface to repair minor to moderate flaws. Sometimes referred to as no-prep veneers, because they require little to no alteration to your natural teeth, veneers are commonly made from porcelain or composite resin to closely resemble your teeth in both structure and appearance. Veneers are a great alternative to other painful dental procedures to improve the appearance of your smile.

Common problems that Veneers will address include:

  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Permanently stained or discolored teeth
  • Crooked or misshapen teeth
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Worn teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

Veneers are often referred to as “instant orthodontics,” because a substantial aesthetic effect can be obtained with the procedure.

The Veneers Procedure

Veneers are applied to the teeth in 2 visits to the dentist:

  • Visit # 1 Veneer Preparation:Your teeth are prepared by removing 0.3 to 0.5 mm of enamel (the thickness of a fingernail) to allow room for the porcelain veneer. Then, an impression of your teeth is taken and sent to our specialized dental laboratory, where the veneers will be created.
  • Visit #2 Veneer Bonding:Veneer bonding occurs, involving several steps that permanently attach the veneer to your tooth. After a cleaning of the tooth, the veneer is bonded with a special dental cement. This dental cement is then hardened with a blue curing light.

At our Ottawa, ON, dental clinic, your skilled and experienced dentist will determine whether veneers are right for your individual needs. He will also assist you with choosing between the porcelain veneers and ones made from composite resin. Porcelain veneers are more stain-resistant and resemble natural teeth more closely, while composite veneers are thinner and require fewer alterations to the affected teeth.
