Losing your teeth is a serious problem that not only prevents you from eating and speaking properly but also negatively affects your self-esteem due to an imperfect smile. In addition, your jaw structure will shrink without adequate support from natural tooth roots, leading to jaw bone loss and sagging facial muscles.
Fortunately, your dentist Dr. Alex Wakter can restore your smile by creating your new artificial teeth through the use of dental implants in Ottawa, ON.
What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant consists of two parts: A titanium post and a dental crown. The post is surgically attached to your jaw to replace the missing root, as titanium’s unique properties promote easier blending with the jaw bone as well as faster healing. Upon completion of the healing process, we will place a ceramic crown onto the outer portion of the titanium post, which will look and function as your former natural tooth.
Dental implants are the ideal solution when you have lost one or more of your teeth. If you have lost a series or even all of your teeth, we can place dental implants to help stabilize your removable bridges or dentures.
Why Dental Implants?
A dental implant allows an artificial tooth to look and function as if it were real, the procedure has additional benefits, including the following:
- Improved stability and comfort
- Better chewing, speaking, and smiling ability
- Support for your facial structure, making you appear younger
- A long-lasting solution to tooth loss!
The procedure commonly involves several dental professionals to complete each individual task: A periodontist, an oral or maxillofacial surgeon, and a prosthodontist or general dentist to implant, design and fit your artificial teeth. At our dental clinic, however, Dr. Wakter can perform every aspect of the procedure in-office to save time and – most importantly – ensure that the treatment is done with the utmost care.
Please note that while dental implants can substantially improve your quality of life, they are not for everyone. Certain chronic health conditions may prevent your eligibility for this procedure, but only your dentist can determine whether or not you are a candidate. Also note that old age is not necessarily a deterrent!
Computer Guided Implant Surgery
In the past radiographic images used to place implants were two dimensional providing a reasonable estimate of bone height. Often bone width was not determined until the bone was exposed during surgery sometimes resulting in compromised placement of the implant.
Computer Guided Implant Surgery gives very detailed 3-D visualizations and coupled with the appropriate software allows us to place implants with a level of precision that was unattainable several years ago. In addition, the surgical procedures can often be accomplished in a much more conservative procedure which involves greatly reduced discomfort, less treatment time and a more accurate final outcome.
Computer Guided Implant placement is the safest and most precise way to place dental implants.
